US set to face Brazil in gold medal women's soccer game

From CNN's Penelope Jennings

For the third time, the American and Brazilian women’s soccer teams will face off for gold as Brazil beat reigning World Cup champions Spain in their semifinal 4-2.

The US beat Brazil 20 years ago in 2004, and again in 2008. They faced off for the CONCACAF W Gold Cup just five months ago where the US won 1-0.

Now they’re set for the third edition of this epic matchup, and Brazil will get the legendary Marta back from suspension.

Brazil are in this position in large part due to Spain’s many mistakes, and heroics by their goalkeeper, Lorena.

After going up 2-0 in the first half, Adriana tacked on a third goal in the 70th minute by capitalizing on another Spanish error. Adriana had kicked the ball into the crossbar, but Spain were unable to clear the ball and she headed in for a goal.

Spain’s 85th minute goal to break the clean sheet went in the scorebook as an own goal, but Salma Paralluelo deserves the credit. Unfortunately for her, Kerolin reestablished Brazil’s three-goal lead on a breakaway minutes later. Paralluelo added another goal in the 12th minute of stoppage time, and nearly completed a hat trick but it would not be enough to make up for early blunders.

Brazil’s win was official following a whopping 15 minutes of stoppage time thanks to numerous injuries and substitutions. Spain will play Germany for bronze on Friday at 9 a.m. ET, and Brazil will play the US for gold on Saturday at 11 a.m. ET.

USA steamrolls Brazil, 122-87, in men's basketball quarterfinals

From CNN's Kyle Feldscher in Paris
August 6, 2024, Olympics news and results | CNN (12)

Team USA huddles after their victory against Brazil in Paris, on August 6.

And it’s all over here, though in reality, it was all over quite a while ago.

Team USA just trounced Brazil, 122-87, as they move toward a semifinal matchup with Serbia. It’s a rematch of the two teams’ opening game of the Olympics, which Team USA won 110-84.

Led by Devin Booker’s 18 points, Anthony Edwards’ 17 and Joel Embiid’s answer to critics online and boo-birds in the crowd, it was just more proof that it is impossible to game plan for this team of stars.

Sure, LeBron James and Kevin Durant can have off nights by their standards, but there’s always another NBA All-Star who’s ready to fill in that gap.

James spent much of the third and fourth quarters in the locker room after taking an inadvertent elbow to the face from a Brazilian player.

He went down to one knee quickly and was eventually guided to the bench by a trainer. He received treatment on the bench before going to the locker room area. He would return and appeared to be OK as the game wound down.

Things are looking good for this team as it looks for its fifth Olympic gold medal in a row.

Algerian boxer Imane Khelif advances to women's 66kg gold medal match

Algeria's Imane Khelif celebrates after defeating Thailand's Janjaem Suwannapheng in Paris, on August 6.

Algerian boxer Imane Khelif defeated Janjaem Suwannaphengof Thailand by unanimous decision in the women’s 66kg welterweight semifinal to advance to Friday’s gold medal match where she will face off with China’s Yang Liu.

Spectators at Roland-Garros Stadium cheered Khelif as she entered the ring. Some in the crowd booed Suwannapheng as she made her entrance.

The broadcast showed Algerian fans waving the country’s flag prior to the bout.

During the fight, the crowd was enthusiastically cheering for the Algerian, shouting Khelif’s name, “Imane! Imane! Imane!”

The fifth seed in the weight class was in control for all three rounds.

After being announced the winner, Khelif waited for Suwannapheng to acknowledge the crowd before she held the ropes for the Thai boxer to exit the ring.

The Algerian then gleefully smiled and danced to celebrate the victory.

She began taking selfies with fans in attendance after speaking to the international press before departing to the crowd chanting her name.

Khelif is sure to be a big crowd favorite on Friday.

LeBron James looks on during the Men's Quarterfinal match between Brazil and the USA in Paris, on August 6.

LeBron James is back on the bench and seems to be fine.

As he walks back to his seat, the crowd begins to chant. It sort of sounds like LeBron and the camera pans to James, who waves and gets a big cheer from the Bercy Arena.

But he wasn’t who the crowd wanted. They were chanting, “Lé-on! Lé-on!” for their new legend, swimmer Léon Marchand, who is in the crowd here.

He waves to the crowd and gets a standing ovation from the arena, who begin to sing his name in adoration.

The only star bigger than the ones on the court here in Paris is the new French swimming hero.

US dominating Brazil now with four minutes left in the final quarter

From CNN's Kyle Feldscher

Well, it’s a 32-point gap now, 112-80 in favor of the US with four minutes to go.

This American team just truly cannot be stopped once it gets going. Brazil made its run in the first half and ever since that four-minute run in the second quarter, Team USA has just been unstoppable.

LeBron James hasn’t returned to the bench after going to the back with what appeared to be an injury to his face after taking an inadvertent elbow from a Brazilian player earlier.

Olympic track coach has Paris Games accreditation revoked ahead of high-profile men's 200m race

From CNN's David Close
August 6, 2024, Olympics news and results | CNN (16)

Coach Rana Reider gestures during a training session in the Stadio dei Marmi ahead of an athletics meeting in Rome, on May 15.

Rana Reider, the personal coach for track stars Andre De Grasse and Lamont Marcell Jacobs, both of whom are competing at Paris 2024, had his Olympic credentials revoked by the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) on Monday.

The COC said the decision to deny the coach’s access to the Games was based on “new information about the appropriateness of Mr. Reider remaining accredited by Team Canada.”

Reider’s attorney, Ryan Stevens, said in a statement Monday that the coach was “unjustly stripped of his Olympic coaching credential, based on years-old claims in a lawsuit by former athletes seeking financial gain.”

Both De Grasse, a three-time Olympian for Canada, and Jacobs, who represents Italy, list Reider as their personal coach on their official Olympics bio pages.

An American coach, Reider had previously been under investigation for alleged sexual misconduct by the US Center for SafeSport.

The COC said Monday the committee had issued accreditation to Reider “based on the understanding that his probation with the US Center for Safe Sport ended in May this year, that he had no other suspensions or sanctions, and otherwise met our eligibility requirements.”

Stevens reiterated what the COC said about Reider not having any sanction against him by the US Center for SafeSport. Stevens also said there is no sanction against the coach by USA Track & Field or Athletics Canada.

CNN has reached out to the US Center for SafeSport for comment.

Reider, is listed as a defendant in three lawsuits in Broward County, Florida, accusing the coach of “sexual and emotional abuses.”

De Grasse is set to race in a 200m semifinal on Wednesday with the final slated for Thursday. He won gold in this event at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. De Grasse failed to qualify for the 100m final in Paris.

Jacobs placed fifth in the men’s 100m event in Paris and is set to race again in the men’s 4x100m relay.

Team Italy had no comment regarding the Reider situation.

It's USA 94, Brazil 71 after three quarters in the men's basketball quarterfinal

From CNN's Kyle Feldscher in Paris

It’s turning into a bit of a laugher here as the USA is on cruise control after three quarters.

Miltiádis Tentóglou defends his Tokyo long jump gold

From CNN's Penelope Jennings
August 6, 2024, Olympics news and results | CNN (17)

Greece’s Miltiádis Tentóglou competes in the men's long jump final in Paris, on August 6.

Greece’s Miltiádis Tentóglou becomes the second athlete ever to win back-to-back long jump titles – the only other person to do it was Carl Lewis, who won four in a row.

Tentóglou grabbed the gold with an 8.48-meter jump.

“It’s a great achievement. I am very happy, but very tired. It’s OK. My distance was not bad, not good. … I didn’t think my jump was going to be enough because the other guys are very talented and capable. I was pushing throughout to do more,” Tentóglou said.

The Greek though sees himself heading to the next couple of Summer Games in order to match Lewis’ feat of four in a row.

“Of course [I’ll go for three in a row]. And four, we’ll see. I will try, I will try. I am 26 now, so I will be 30 in LA, so it’s possible.”

Jamaica’s Wayne Pinnock earned silver with 8.36, while Italian Mattia Furlani finished just behind with 8.34 for bronze.

Medical staff tend to LeBron James in Paris on August 6.

LeBron James is getting treatment after taking an inadvertent elbow to the face on Brazil’s last basket.

James went down after Brazil made a layup to make the game 74-51 in favor of the US. He was holding an area just next to his left eye and motioned to a trainer that he was cut.

He held a towel to his face as the US bench appeared in some distress. He eventually went with a trainer back to the locker room to receive treatment.

The USA, meanwhile, is continue to pile on the points against the Brazilians, as it’s now a 24-point game with four minutes to go in the third.

USA's Amit Elor wins gold in women's wrestling

From CNN's Ben Morse and Kyle Feldscher in Paris
August 6, 2024, Olympics news and results | CNN (19)

Amit Elor bites her gold medal after winning the women's 68kg freestyle wrestling match on August 6.

She’s done it – Amit Elor has won the gold medal in the women’s 68kg freestyle!

It’s an astonishing run to a medal because she’s competing out of her normal weight class.

She made her name in the 72kg weight class, winning the 2022 World Wrestling Championships – becoming the youngest US wrestler, male or female, world champion aged 18 – before successfully defending her crown a year later.

But the 72kg weight class isn’t part of the Olympic Games, meaning she needed to cut down to compete. And she has adjusted to life at a lighter weight seamlessly.

Remarkably, she won her first two matches with a combined score of 18-2 before going one better and beating North Korea’s Pak Sol Gum in the semifinal in just one minute and 44 seconds.

Legendary Cuban wrestler Mijaín López defeats longtime friend Yasmani Acosta to win historic gold medal

From CNN's Matias Grez
August 6, 2024, Olympics news and results | CNN (20)

Mijaín López of Cuba celebrates winning gold against Yasmani Acosta Fernandez of Chile, in Paris, on August 6.

Cuba’s Mijaín López has become the first Olympian in history to win five gold medals in the same individual event.

The legendary Greco-Roman wrestler absolutely dominated Chile’s Yasmani Acosta in the 130kg final, winning 6-0.

López’s Olympic career started at Athens 2004 and he has gone on to win the gold medal in Beijing, London, Rio, Tokyo and now Paris.

He even took a break from wrestling last September after his father passed away and only recently started training again – but he still looked utterly unbeatable in Paris.

Acosta’s story is equally as remarkable. Born in Cuba, he represented his home nation until the 2015 Pan American Championships in Santiago, Chile, where he remained after the games were over.

Given López was Cuba’s dominant wrestler, Acosta – who is close friends with López and was his training partner for nine years – rarely got the opportunity to represent Cuba on the biggest stage.

He has previously spoken about how he would be in tears watching wrestlers win at previous Olympics, knowing he could have easily beaten them.

He worked as a security guard for two years in Chile before being granted citizenship and narrowly missed out on bronze in Tokyo.

Now, he has realized his lifelong dream of standing on an Olympic podium as he wins the silver medal.

After the fight, López takes off his shoes and leaves them in the middle of the ring, indicating his retirement from the sport.

López and his coach are in tears.

The two bronze medals went toAmin Mirzazadehof Iran andChina’s Meng Lingzhe.

USA 63, Brazil 36 at halftime of men's basketball quarterfinal

From CNN's Kyle Feldscher in Paris

Quite the exclamation mark to end the half from the Americans as Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James tosses an inbounds pass alley-oop to Devin Booker, who jams it home over a Brazilian defender.

Just an incredible final four minutes of the half for Team USA. At one point leading by eight and seeing the Brazilians make a mini comeback, the team of American superstars ends the half on a 21-5 run that threatens to make the second half of this one a cakewalk for the US.

As a group, Team USA is shooting 59% from the field, including 6-of-12 from three. They’re out rebounding the Brazilians 27-14, have 19 assists to Brazil’s 10 and have three fewer turnovers. It’s a comprehensive performance at this point.

Joel Embiid leads the way with 14 points, James has 10 and Booker has nine.

Women’s soccer semifinal: Brazil leadSpain 2-0 at the start of the second half

From CNN's Penelope Jennings
August 6, 2024, Olympics news and results | CNN (21)

Team Brazil celebrates after their goal against Spain in Marseille, France, on August 6.

Brazil are shocking the reigning World Cup champions.

Spain are struggling and are down 2-0 as the second half gets going, and have already had more scoring chances this half.

Just five minutes into the game, Cata Coll, Spain’s keeper kicked the ball off her own teammate and into her own goal. Gabi Portilho tacked on another goal in first half stoppage time and added insult to injury when she twerked in celebration.

Spain came back from 2-0 down to Colombia in the quarterfinals, but they have a lot of work ahead of them if they want a chance at gold.

Team USA answers Brazil's run with one of their own and reestablishes a big lead

From CNN's Kyle Feldscher in Paris

It seems like that Brazil run just made Team USA find another gear.

It’s quickly 55-36 after Joel Embiid silences the boos with an and-one free throw, adding to his game-high 14. Embiid has faced some criticism for his play during this tournament, but he is looking like the former NBA MVP that he is tonight in Paris.

LeBron James just sliced to the basket for a layup and Jrue Holiday hit a mid-range jumper after a defensive stop and it’s suddenly 59-36 with less than a minute left in the first half.

Simone Biles describes to CNN what it feels like to be flipping and twisting through the air

From CNN's Coy Wire and Matias Grez
August 6, 2024, Olympics news and results | CNN (25)

Simone Biles competes during the Artistic Gymnastics Women's Vault Final in Paris, on August 3.

Flipping and twisting through the air multiple times is something most of us will never experience.

While it may be a terrifying prospect for most people, Biles says she still finds it “really exciting” after all these years training and competing.

“Honestly, sometimes it feels like time goes really fast, like the floor comes sooner than it should,” she laughs.

Team USA jumps out to early lead over Brazil in men's basketball quarterfinal

Georginho de Paula of Brazil and Kevin Durant of USA battle for the ball in Paris, on August 6.

It has to be almost impossible to game plan to play this American team.

LeBron James and Kevin Durant have been the most likely faces to lead this team in scoring during this tournament. But so far through the first quarter, it’s Durant’s Phoenix Suns teammate Devin Booker and Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid who are pacing Team USA with five points each.

It’s a tough task for the Brazilians, but they’ve not been blown away out of the gate. Team USA leads 18-11 with four minutes left in the first quarter.

Here's why French fans are booing Joel Embiid

From CNN's Kyle Feldscher in Paris

It was a constant in group play and it’s happening again here in Paris tonight: Joel Embiid is being booed hard by the French fans in attendance.

Embiid is the target of ire because he is playing for Team USA and not France. Embiid was born in Cameroon but has a French passport as well, which would have made him eligible to play for the host nation.

Embiid became a US citizen in 2023 and chose to play for Team USA instead of either Cameroon or France, and the French fans haven’t forgiven him.

Winfred Yavi of Bahrain celebrates after winning the women's 3000m steeplechase final in Paris, on August 6.

For most of the women’s 3000m steeplechase final, the top five runners led the race in their own pack, far ahead of the competition.

Then in the last lap, the top two competitors, Bahrain’s Winfred Yavi and Uganda’s Peruth Chemutai, pulled head of the bunch.

Yavi hovered around fourth for a while and only pulled ahead with Chemutai in the last 30 seconds of the race. She bid her time and finally took the lead when it really mattered, just before the finish, bursting past the Ugandan for the gold medal.

The world champion, who set a new Olympic record with her run of 8:52.76, could be heard squealing and seen dancing with joy after her gold medal effort.

Chemutai and Kenya’s Faith Cherotich rounded out the podium. World record-holder, Beatrice Chepkoech of Kenya, finished in sixth.

One of the enduring images of these Olympic Games will be Simone Biles and her USA teammate Jordan Chiles bowing to Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade as she took her place atop the podium after winning gold in the floor exercise.

It was a display of sportsmanship and humility, and encapsulated what it means for athletes to have the Olympic spirit.

Without doubt, it will go down as one of the most iconic Olympic moments.

“I think it was really important for that moment,” Biles tells CNN’s Coy Wire. “Obviously, it was just me and Jordan being me and Jordan, but I know it was really special and it was very impactful for kids to see that. You win with grace, you lose with grace.”

During these Olympics, Biles faced comments online about her appearance, specifically her hairstyle.

She hit back at those critics in an Instagram post and had a message for young girls around the world who have faced similar disparaging comments.

“You guys are beautiful, confident,” she said.

Cole Hocker celebrates winning the gold medal during the men's 1,500 meters final in Paris, France on August 6.

USA’s Cole Hocker has just taken a stunning, surprise victory in the men’s 1,500 meters, setting an Olympic record of 3:27.65.

This race was supposed to be about the rivalry between Norway’s Jakob Ingebrigtsen and Great Britain’s Josh Kerr, with Hocker an outside shot for the medals.

Kerr looked to have judged his race perfectly when he moved past Ingebrigtsen in the closing stages, but Hocker surged up the inside to claim the biggest win of his career.

Kerr, the reigning world champion, claimed silver in 3:27.79, while USA’s Yared Nuguse was just edged out of second but took an excellent bronze in 3:27.80.

And Ingrebrigtsen, who went into this race as the Olympic record holder and reigning champion? He tightened up at the end and finished fourth in 3:28.24.

Who saw that coming?!

Simone Biles tells CNN competing in Paris "meant the world" after struggles at Tokyo 2020

Simone Biles talks to CNN's Coy Wire in Paris on August 6.

Simone Biles put on a show at the Paris Olympics and walked away another three gold medals and a silver to add to her extraordinary collection.

But the road to get to Paris wasn’t easy.

At Tokyo 2020, Biles started suffering from the ‘twisties,’ a mysterious phenomenon that suddenly means a gymnast is no longer able to do a twisting skill she’s done thousands of times before.

Biles said that made her participation and performances in Paris all the sweeter.

“It was important to me because nobody forced me to be out there on that stage,” she told CNN’s Coy Wire.

Biles says she “dealt” with the twisties in therapy, something she has spoken about on a number of occasions since Tokyo.

Despite overcoming them, she admits that doubts sometimes still begin to creep in.

“Obviously, you always have those thoughts coming into the back of your head, but just trying to stay as positive as possible, going back to what I know, thinking about my therapy tactics – and it worked,” she added.

To make her silver medal performance on the floor exercise even more impressive, Biles arrived to the interview wearing a protective boot on her left foot.

The 27-year-old had to have her leg taped for her performance after suffering a fall in the warmup.

USA’s Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, the reigning Olympic champion and world record holder in the women’s 400-meter hurdles, is expected to be one of the stars of these Games.

She’s back out on the Stade de France track and breezes through her semifinal in a time of 52.12 seconds to win the heat by a huge margin.

McLaughlin-Levrone’s biggest rival in this event will be Netherlands’ Femke Bol, the current world champion and an Olympic bronze medalist over 400m hurdles.

Bol steps onto the track next and is safely through her semifinal, too, in a slightly slower time of 52.57.

That sets up a thrilling showdown between Bol and McLaughlin-Levrone on Thursday, though the American, who set her latest world record of 50.65 at the US Olympic trials, will go into the race as the favorite.

France upsets Canada 82-73 and will play Germany in the semifinals of men's basketball tournament

France's Guerschon Yabusele celebrates on Tuesday.

Riding a wave of adrenaline supplied by the home nation crowd, France defeated Canada 82-73 to advance to the semifinals of this tournament and the chance to play for a medal.

Led by Isaïa Cordinier’s 20 points, the French team jumped out to an incredible start that set the crowd at the Bercy Arena into a frenzy. The din overpowering throughout the night, but the play eventually settled into a less-frantic form of basketball as the French kept the pressure on the Canadians and carried a double-digit lead into halftime.

The French maintained that lead through the third quarter, but a quick run by the Canadians narrowed the lead to six in the early part of the fourth quarter. From there, the game tightened considerably.

The Canadians made it a five-point game at one point, but they were never able to get closer than that. The dagger came when Evan Fournier, who had started the game on the bench in a gamble by French coach Vincent Collet, ended a lengthy French possession with a dagger three-pointer to rebuild the lead to eight with 55 seconds to go.

From there, it was a French party filled with drums, singing, chanting and at least one or two sighs of relief.

The French will next play Germany in the semifinals later on this week.

They were killer offensive boards because eventually the ball made its way to Evan Fournier, who buried a three to restore the French lead to 10 with 55 seconds to play.

The comeback story of US swimming star Simone Manuel

August 6, 2024, Olympics news and results | CNN (46)

Simone Manuel of Team United States competes in the women's 50m freestyle heats on day eight of the Olympic Games Paris 2024 at Paris La Defense Arena on August 3.

At Rio 2016, American swimming star Simone Manuel became the first Black woman swimmer to earn an individual gold at the Olympics, winning the 100 meter freestyle.

But things took an unexpected turn just when she was reaching her prime. Manuel was diagnosed with overtraining syndrome in 2021; the swimmer was unable to recuperate after training, her body was overcome with constant nausea and fatigue.

She thought her career might be over after a disappointing Tokyo Olympics where she only won a team bronze in the 4x100m freestyle relay. She didn’t know if she could go on.

“I just needed to breath,” Manuel told CNN Sport. She walked away from the sport she loves for five months to find clarity – and she found it.

Manuel learned to live with her condition and found the inner strength to persevere. She worked her way back to the Olympic stage and is now leaving Paris with two silver relay medals brining her career total to seven.

Her impressive comeback story comes with her strong message of the importance of mental health and caring for oneself.

She also tells CNN about her concern for the lack of understanding – by casual fans and the media – of how stressful the Olympic stage is for athletes. Manuel quoted a post she made on X, formerly known as Twitter, in 2021 following Caeleb Dressel not qualifying for a swimming final and being emotionally overcome after missing out on qualifying for a final.

“I’ll forever stand by this. Interviews/recordings/ photography in these moments really aren’t necessary,” Manuel posted. “I can attest to the fact that the moment is already traumatic and the capture of it is even more grueling. I hope we can give athletes more grace because they’re human first!”

Amit Elor was born one day late to compete in trials for Tokyo 2020. But this time round in Paris, she is making up for lost time.

The 20-year-old has blitzed through her women’s freestyle 68kg competition at the Games and at 7:53 p.m. Paris time (1:53 p.m. ET) will go for gold.

Elor will be facing Meerim Zhumanazarova of Kyrgyzstan in the final for the gold medal. Kyrgyzstan has never won an Olympic gold medal.

Remarkably, she won her first two games with a combined score of 18-2 before going one better and beating North Korea’s Pak Sol-gum in the semifinal in just 1 minute and 44 seconds.

If one team is used to dealing with pressure, it’s the US women’s soccer team.

So much is always expected from those who wear the jersey and all eyes will be on the side’s semifinal against Germany today.

The crunch match will start at 12 p.m. ET (6 p.m. local) in Lyon, with Emma Hayes’ team hoping to continue its unbeaten run in this year’s competition.

The US women have won four gold medals in the Olympic Games — including a three-peat from 2004 to 2012 — but have gone without winning the competition since London 12 years ago, losing in the quarterfinals to Sweden in 2016 and winning the bronze medal in Tokyo three years ago.

In truth, the team is still in a transition period but have shown potential in Paris that points toward a bright future.

Importantly, it has already beaten Germany in this year’s tournament, winning 4-1 in its second Group B match. The players will also be riding a high after winning a dramatic quarterfinal against Japan, courtesy of a late goal from Trinity Rodman.

The winner of the semifinal will face either Brazil or Spain in the gold medal match on August 10.

How the teams will line up today:

USWNT: Alyssa Naeher, Emily Fox, Naomi Girma, Trinity Rodman, Crystal Dunn, Mallory Swanson, Lindsey Horan, Sophia Smith, Tierna Davidson, Rose Lavelle, Sam Coffey.

Germany: Ann-Katrin Berger, Kathrin Hendrich, Marina Hegering, Janina Minge, Sydney Lohmann, Sjoeke Nuesken, Giulia Gwinn, Jule Brand, Klara Bühl, Felicitas Rauch, Nicole Anyomi.

Aleksa Avramovic ofSerbiacelebrates the team's win at the Bercy Arena on August 6.

It was truly a tale of two halves here in the second quarterfinal of the men’s basketball tournament.

Australia and Serbia, with rosters dotted with NBA talent, played the most dramatic game of this tournament so far on Tuesday, the Serbs eventually coming out on top 95-90 in overtime.

The game started off with Australia on an absolute tear, led by the hot hand of Miami Heat player Patty Mills. His 20 points in the first half helped pace the Aussies to a huge lead as Nikola Jokić and company could not buy a bucket for huge stretches of the first half.

But the Serbs turned the momentum somewhat as the first half came to a close and then started off the third quarter on fire. A massive third quarter run brought them even and then ahead as the Bercy Arena in Paris exploded with noise.

The Aussies wouldn’t wilt in the face of that run and the fourth quarter was a back-and-forth affairs that stayed tight throughout. Jokić and Bogdan Bogdanović took over the offense for the Serbs while Josh Giddey carried to load for his team, ending with 25 points. The Serbs looked to have done enough, but were only able to get their lead to 2 points with seconds to play.

Mills, who was largely quiet in the second half, came up huge with a prayer of a shot that fell with 1.4 seconds to play, sending the game into overtime.

The extra 5 minutes was a heavyweight fight of punches and counterpunches that would eventually be settled by Jokić hitting one of his trademark fallaway jumpers in the low post over an out-stretched defenders hand. A steal on the ensuing inbounds pass and two more free throws from Bogdanović sealed the win for the Serbs.

The 35-year-old has had some huge moments for the Boomers at these Games and was asked about his game-tying shot.

Serbia will play the winner of USA-Brazil later on tonight.

From CNN's Kyle Feldscher in Paris

A punch-counterpunch overtime is down to its final seconds.

Australia took the lead briefly, but now Serbia has it back, 93-90.

Nikola Jokić just put on an absolute clinic in the low post, backing down his defender and hitting a fadeaway turnaround jumper to put his team up by 3 heading into the final stretch.

It’ll be up to the Aussies to pull out some last-second heroics one more time.

Serbia is up by one point with less than a minute to play and they have the ball.

Neither team has made their last two shots as things tighten up with the game on the line.

Silver medallist China's Chen Yuxi, gold medallist China's Quan Hongchan and bronze medallist North Korea's Kim Mi Rae stand on the podium after the women's 10m platform diving final during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games at the Aquatics Centre in Saint-Denis, on August 6.

She’s just 17, but Quan Hongchan has just retained her Olympic title in the women’s 10m platform diving final.

The Chinese athlete scored a 90-point perfect dive on a forward 3½ somersaults pike on her way to yet another gold medal, beating compatriot ChenYuxi courtesy of a better final attempt.

Quan is now a three-time gold medalist, but she had more pressing matters on her mind after her victory.

“Hungry,” she responded when asked about how she felt after the event. “Let’s get something to eat. I ate this morning at 8 a.m., one energy bar, went back to sleep, woke up at 11 a.m., had some milk tea. That’s all I’ve eaten.”

She won her first gold in the same event three years ago in Tokyo, aged only 14.

North Korea’s Kim Mi-rae won bronze but couldn’t get close to the Chinese pair who finished in the exact same positions in Tokyo three years ago.

It also marks yet another diving success for China in Paris, as the country bids to win a clean sweep of diving gold medals at this year’s Olympics.

Silver: Chen Yuxi – 420.70

From CNN's Kyle Feldscher in Paris

The teams are back on the court and we’re underway in the second half here at the Bercy Arena.

The first half was all about Patty Mills of Australia. The Miami Heat guard poured in 20 points on 8-for-11 shooting and is far outpacing all other scorers.

Nikola Jokić ended up in double figures in the second half with 11 points, but will need to put his team on his back here in the second. Bogdan Bogdanović also started to step up in that second quarter and will be key down the stretch.

The Serbs are not going away as their shooting finally started to pick up in the back half of the second quarter.

At halftime, it’s Australia 54, Serbia 42.

The atmosphere here is like an NCAA tournament game. Both Serbs and Aussies are out in full force and massive cheers greet every bucket. As with nearly every event at these Games, the fans are loud and into every bit of the action.

The Serbs’ run was answered at points by the Aussies, who finish the half shooting a lights-out 62%. If you’re a Serbia fan, you have to hope that kind of effort won’t keep up as we go into the second half.

Australia's #05 Patty Mills outflanks Serbia's #27 Dejan Davidovac in the men's quarterfinal basketball match on August 6.

The Australians are just running all over the Serbs at the moment.

Patty Mills now has 18 points and the disjointed Serb offense is not making any sort of impact with Nikola Jokić getting a breather on the bench. A 6-0 run to open the second quarter requires the Serbs to take a timeout to try and blunt the Boomers’ momentum.

There’s still a lot of time left, and Germany came back from a 12-point deficit in the first game to take the quarterfinal from Greece. But this one is threatening to get out of hand early.

Australia is shooting an absolutely blistering 79% from the field, including 4-for-6 from beyond the arc. Serbia, meanwhile, is having trouble buying a bucket and is shooting 36%.

Jokić is still stuck on the six points that he had to end the first quarter as we approach the halfway point of the second.

Josh Giddey and Patty Mills star early for Australia as the Boomers open up a lead on Serbia

From CNN's Kyle Feldscher in Paris

Josh Giddey of Australia is out and running in this quarterfinal men’s basketball match-up.

Australia has a 31-17 lead over Serbia as we approach the end of the first quarter and the Chicago Bulls guard is starting to put criticisms of his performance so far in France to rest. His hot start helped pace the Boomers to an early lead.

Nikola Jokić is so far mostly quiet for the Europeans, who haven’t really gotten into any kind of offensive flow yet. This team will likely go as far as Jokić can carry them, so he needs to get going – he has six points so far.

Meanwhile, Australia’s Patty Mills just knocked down multiple threes as the first quarter comes to a close and the Serbians are reeling. Mills has 12 points in just 10 minutes of play.

Men's speed climbing heats conclude with a world record and a lot of noise from the crowd

From CNN's George Ramsay in Paris

The men’s speed climbing heats have concluded at Le Bourget and eight athletes will progress to Thursday’s final.

USA’s Sam Watson stole the show with a time of 4.75 seconds to break his own world record, while the home crowd also had a reason to cheer: France’s Bassa Mawem, with the final act of the session, gained a spot in the final by just 0.01 seconds.

Janja Garnbret of Slovenia competes during the women's boulder & lead semifinal on day eleven of the Olympic Games Paris 2024 at Le Bourget Sport Climbing Venue on August 6.

Much was expected of Janja Garnbret before action began in Paris and the Slovenian certainly hasn’t disappointed so far.

The climber earned a near-perfect score during the bouldering semifinals on Tuesday, totalling 99.6 out of a possible 100.

“It should be 100,” she said afterwards. “The first two problems went smoothly. Third one, it was basically just a little slip at the beginning, but otherwise no problems.

“And then the fourth one, it was causing me some problems for some reason, and I still don’t know why.

“I have to ask my coach what I did wrong because I just didn’t feel too comfortable, but I did it my way in the end, which was also great.”

Garnbret must now keep her concentration for the lead semifinals on Thursday. The scores from both lead and bouldering will be combined to determine who makes the final.

Sport climbing at Paris has been a hit yet again, after making its debut at the Tokyo Games three years ago.

What is the track and field repechage system introduced for the first time at Paris Olympics?

From CNN's Chris Liakos

Team USA’s Freddie Crittenden successfully gambled that he would qualify for 110m hurdles semifinals in a ‘second chance’ race, but why was he allowed to do this?

Athletes as well as viewers are getting accustomed to a new system World Athletics has introduced for the first time at the Paris Olympics.

The so called repechage round allows athletes “who do not qualify by place in round one heats” to essentially have a second chance to qualify for the semis.

Previously, automatic qualifiers and the next fastest overall times would make it through round one. Now, everyone has the opportunity to come back and compete again in the repechage round.

Only athletes who made a false start or did not finish are excluded from the repechage round.

“The new format means that every athlete competing in the events with a repechage round will have at least two races at the Olympic Games,” World Athletics said.

The new system was introduced to all individual track events from 200 meters to 1500 meters, including all hurdles event.

The new track and field system for this Olympics resembles the repechage round in rowing events where non-automatic qualifiers also get a second chance to qualify to the semifinals. Other sports like judo and wrestling feature repechage rounds as well.

Gold medalist Armand Duplantis of Sweden poses in front of the scored board after setting a new world record during the men's pole vault final at Stade de France on August 5.

On Monday night at the Stade de France, Swedish pole vaulter Mondo Duplantis successfully defended his Olympic title and notched up another world record in the process.

It was a moment he had been gearing up to his entire life.

“I had this feeling of peace and confidence that is hard to explain, but for it to work out the way it did is unbelievable really,” he told CNN Sport’s Amanda Davies the morning after his record-breaking feat.

The 24-year-old keeps rewriting the history books. He’s raised the world record six centimeters in the the last four-and-a-half years since he first broke it. It previously took 23 years to move it that distance.

His achievements have been recognized by some of the world’s best athletes, including the recently crowned men’s 100m champion Noah Lyles.

Duplantis said he’s not currently thinking about breaking the world record again, but added he is “very hungry” and “motivated” to keep hunting for more success.

The men’s speed climbing heats are not 15 minutes old but already we’ve seen the Olympic record broken several times.

Perhaps that’s not a huge surprise given this is only the second time that speed climbing has appeared at the Olympics after its debut in Tokyo three years ago.

Indonesia’s Veddriq Leonardo is the latest to set a new best at the Games, flying up the wall in a world-record-tying time of 4.79 seconds.

Prior to that, Kazakhstan’s Amir Maimuratov and USA’s Sam Watson, who also has the world record in this event, were among those setting Olympic records.

In Tokyo, athletes competed in three climbing disciplines – speed, lead, and bouldering – for one set of medals.

But in Paris, the speed event, considered more of a specialized form of climbing, has been made into a separate category. Quite simply, it requires athletes to get to the top of a 15-meter wall as quickly as possible while competing in a head-to-head format.

Chopra will be looking to add yet another medal to his growing list of achievements in Paris, as he continues to cement himself as one of the brightest talents in track and field.

The reigning Olympic champion and heavy favorite to retain her title, Yui Susaki, was stunned in the first round of the women’s freestyle 50kg wrestling event by Vinesh Phogat of India.

Susaki, who was the top seed in the event and who had never previously lost an international bout at senior level, lost on points 3-2 to Phogat.

Susaki scored one technical point in the first period whereas Phogat picked up none.

However in the second period, the Japanese wrestler could only pick up one more point while her Indian opponent picked up three.

It is a huge shock as Susaki had romped to the Olympic gold three years ago in Tokyo without conceding a single point. She is also the first wrestler in history to achieve a “grand slam” in the sport – becoming world champion at U15s, U17s, U20s, U23s, senior and Olympic level.

Susaki still has a chance of competing for a bronze medal via the repechage if Phogat reaches the final.

Phogat will now face Oksana Livach of Ukraine in the quarterfinals.

In a video posted on her TikTok account, Ramsey said that she had a pap smear performed. That wasn’t all, as she said she had booked a dentist appointment and an eye exam.

“Like, what?!” an incredulous Ramsey said.

Ramsey said her videos displaying her incredulity at the free healthcare were picked up by media in France and that she has received positive feedback from workers.

“So when I was going into my eye doctors appointment – my free eye doctor’s appointment in the Olympic Village – my eye doctor recognized me. She was like: ‘Your video’s going viral.’

“And then when I left, there were all these workers coming up to me and being like: ‘Thank you for your video.’ … France, you did do your big ones with free healthcare, or every other country minus America, did their big one with free healthcare.”

The experience seems to have changed Ramsey’s approach to healthcare.

She said in another video where she appeared to be at the dentist’s office: “This is going to be my new fight for action. Free healthcare in America. Period.”

She added: “Anyways, America needs to do better with their healthcare system. There’s no reason why me, an American girl, should be so amazed by free healthcare.”

Algerian runner misses out on men’s 100m semifinal by 0.001s while winner advances by just 0.002s

From CNN's Ben Morse

If you thought the men’s 100m final was a close finish, then this men’s 110m hurdles race takes the biscuit.

Noah Lyles won gold on Sunday by five-thousandths of a second, but in Tuesday’s second repechage heat at the Stade de France, the margin was even tighter.

The trio of Rafael Pereira of Brazil, France’s Raphael Mohamed and Algeria’s Amine Bouanani finished almost perfectly in sync, needing a photo finish to determine a winner.

Pereira was the eventual winner with a time of 13.54 seconds. Remarkably, he finished 0.002 seconds ahead of the second-placed Raphael Mohamed, who also booked his spot in the semifinals.

Even more remarkably, it was heartbreak for Bouanani as he missed out a spot in the semifinals by one thousandth of a second.

It was a chaotic race even before the start, with multiple false starts – Kazakhstan’s David Yefremov was disqualified as a result – and the starters gun appearing to break too.

It wasn’t the only extremely tight 110m hurdles repechage heat, with the third also coming down to a photo finish. This time, France’s Wilhem Belocian advanced to the semifinals ahead of Japan’s Shunya Takayama by just five-thousandths of a second.

Noemie Fox and Jessica Fox celebrate after winning gold in the canoe slalom women's kayak cross final on day ten of the Olympic Games Paris 2024 at Vaires-Sur-Marne Nautical Stadium on August 5.

Australian sisters Jess and Noemie Fox have clinched gold medals for Australia in canoe and kayak slalom — following the footsteps of their Olympic medalist mother.

Australian flagbearer Jess Fox won gold in the women’s canoe slalom and another in the kayak slalom. Her sister, Noemie, won gold in the kayak cross.

After watching her sister win on Monday, Jess Fox leapt into the water to hug her, accompanied by their mum, Myriam, who competed in kayak singles for France and won Bronze at the 1996 Olympic Games.

Speaking to reporters after her sisters win, an elated Jess said her sisters win meant “poor dad is the only one without an Olympic medal,” Channel 9 reported.

Their father, Richard Fox, competed at the 1992 Olympic Games in the kayak singles.

The Greeks are bursting out of the gate in the first quarterfinal matchup against Germany.

After the first quarter, it’s a 10-point game as Greece leads Germany 21-11. The Greeks were the lowest seed from pool play to qualify for the knockout rounds, and they are jumping on this opportunity early.

Team USA’s Freddie Crittenden safely through to 110m hurdles semifinals after previously jogging through his heat

Freddie Crittenden of Team United States competes during the men's 110m hurdles on day eleven of the Olympic Games Paris 2024 at Stade de France on August 6.

Freddie Crittenden’s gamble paid off.

The American turned heads after appearing to take it easy in his 110m hurdles heat, jogging through the race and finishing almost five seconds behind the winner.

He eventually revealed that it was a strategic decision after feeling some pain coming into the sprint and opted to not risk injury, knowing that he had another go in the repechage race. The new system gives runners who don’t automatically qualify in their heats a second chance to make the semis.

Crittenden made good on this opportunity, winning the race with a time of 13.42 seconds to qualify for the next round.

The 30-year-old is making his Olympic debut in what he describes as a “dream come true.” He kissed the track in celebration after crossing the line first.

Spain’s Asier Martínez also moved on to the semifinals, finishing 0.04 seconds behind Crittenden.

Diribe Welteji leadsFaithKipyegon, center, and Nikki Hiltz in the women's 1500m round 1 heats during the Paris 2024 Olympic Summer Games at Stade de France on August 6.

It’s been quite the 24 hours for Kenyan runner Faith Kipyegon.

On Monday night, she claimed silver in the women’s 5000m. After celebrating on track, she was then told she had been disqualified for some pushing and pulling that had occurred towards the end of the race.

After appealing the decision, the silver medal was then reinstated around two hours later.

The rollercoaster saga didn’t knock Kipyegon off her stride this morning, though. The Kenyan qualified for the women’s 1500m semifinal after finishing fourth in her heat.

Kipyegon is the current world and Olympic record holder in the event and won gold at the Tokyo Games three years ago.

Marathon swimming training session in River Seine canceled Tuesday

From CNN's Thomas Schlachter

The marathon swimming familiarization event set for Tuesday has been canceled, Paris 2024 organizers said.

The women’s marathon swimming event is set to take place on Thursday with the men’s event being held the following day in the River Seine.

World Aquatics later confirmed that it made the decision, in collaboration with Games organizers, to cancel the session due to “water quality concerns.”

“The water quality review showed E. coli levels ranged from 326 to 517 (considered ‘very good’ to ‘good’) at the four collection points taken on 5 August between 5:00 and 6:00 a.m,” the statement said. “However, Enterococci levels exceeded World Aquatics maximum thresholds during the morning review. The latest Enterococci samples (taken between 12:30 and 13:20 on 4 August) showed levels exceeding the maximum acceptable World Aquatics thresholds.”

A further four water quality tests were held today, with one failing to meet the governing body’s standards.

A second familiarization session is set to be held tomorrow, provided that water quality levels meet the required levels.

The statement added that Paris 2024 organizers and World Aquatics “remain confident that the Marathon Swimming competitions on 8 and 9 August will proceed as planned.”

This is not the first training session in the Seine to be scrapped since the start of the Games. Familiarization events for both men’s and women’s triathlon as well as the mixed triathlon relay race were also canceled due to the river’s water quality levels.

Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo on Monday reiterated that the Seine is clean and safe to swim in.

“There are people who will continue to talk nonsense, who will continue to want to explain that it’s not true… Enough with fake news… It won’t spoil our pleasure because we know what we’ve done,” Hidalgo said while speaking to RMC Sport.

“We’re so happy that the Seine has been cleaned up, that we can swim, after all the mockery and controversy,” she said, adding that it’s time to “enjoy and realize that a decontaminated river will change our lives.”

“After receiving the results of the water quality tests of the samples collected on August 5 between 5am and 6.30am, World Triathlon stands by its decision to go ahead with the [triathlon] races as scheduled,” the sport’s governing body said in a statement.

“Three of the four values for E.Coli were considered ‘very good’, a fourth one was ‘good’. For Enterococci, three were writhing the norms whilst one was slightly above the threshold but it was taken outside the swim course of the mixed relay.”

Meanwhile, Team USA triathlete Morgan Pearson said lessons about water safety levels could be learned from the experience in Paris.

“I think they could have invested more into having clean water. It seems like they kind of were just hoping for the best and know the athletes are gonna do it because it’s the Olympics,” he said.

“I think they could have invested more – maybe differently. It sounds like they invested a lot of money, but maybe, they had the wrong ideas. They need more idea people.”

3x3 basketball had its first classic final on Monday – and a potential turning point

A general view of the court during the men's 3x3 basketball gold medal game between the Netherlands and France on day ten of the Olympic Games Paris 2024 at Esplanade Des Invalides on August 5.

In just its second ever Olympics, 3x3 basketball was more of a curiosity than a must-see event when these Games began in Paris. Played in front of no fans in Tokyo during its first go-round three years ago, it was a sort ofamuse boucheto the main men’s and women’s traditional 5-on-5 basketball tournaments.

But on Monday night, 3x3 basketball had its breakout moment.

Germany won a heart-pounding women’s final, which was followed by an electric men’s gold medal match between the Netherlands and host nation France.

With the game on the line, Dutch guard Worthy de Jong produced one of the moments of the Games, heaving up a two-point shot in overtime that somehow found the bottom of the bucket to steal the gold for his nation.

De Jong played full 5-on-5 competition in the past but switched formats because he “didn’t have the joy in basketball any more.”

TaraDavis-Woodhallposes with gold medal after winning the women's long jump during the US Olympic Team Trials at Hayward Field, Oregon, on June 29.

The women’s long jump competition starts today, with athletes heading to the Stade de France in Saint-Denis for the qualification rounds.

Among those bidding for a place in this year’s final is US star Tara Davis-Woodhall.

The “free-spirited” long jumper spoke to CNN earlier this year about her attitude towards the sport among other things.

Davis-Woodhall will hope to replicate the form she showed at this year’s indoor world championships, where she picked up the gold medal.

It followed the bitter disappointment of finishing second at last year’s world championships.

The American is also confident she can go better than the sixth-place finish she managed at the Tokyo Games.

“Now, I’ve figured out where I want to be and I’m doing what I want to do,” she said.

Davis-Woodhall advanced to the long jump final with her 6.90 meters effort, and she credits her new red meat diet for helping her perform.

When asked how she will celebrate if she wins gold, she said: “Another sirloin.”

It was another incredible day in Paris. Catch up on what happened Monday in the Olympics

From CNN's Kyle Feldscher in Paris

It was another dramatic day at the Olympic Games that saw world records, legends slip, others soar and a relatively new sport to these Games have its breakout moment.

Monday started with a dramatic triathlon. Germany took home the Olympic gold medal in the mixed relay triathlon after a late comeback by Laura Lindemann helped overcome a 12-second deficit to help the Germans get the win. The USA defending its silver medal from Tokyo and Great Britain picked up the bronze in a photo finish in front of the packed Paris streets.

The build up of the race was dominated by ongoing discussions around the safety of the River Seine.

The action then moved to the gym, where Simone Biles was aiming to go for her fourth and fifth gold medals in Paris. Instead,in thewomen’s floor exercise,Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade won the gold, with Biles winning her 11th medal with a silver and Jordan Chiles taking home the bronze medal.

Biles had fallen off the beam earlier in the day and then struggled withanother fall during her warm up. She took to the floor with her left calf strapped with tape.

In themen’s horizontal bar, thevast majority of competitors struggledwith either staying on the bars or with their landings.

Alice D’Amato’s sterling routine won her the gold medal in thewomen’s balance beamcompetition, a final that was also marked by disappointing performances from some of the sport’s top stars, who struggled to stay on the beam.

On the track, there was an early huge upset when Molly Caudery from Team Great Britain failed to clear 4.55 meters in the women’s pole vault qualification round. She will not be in Wednesday’s final.

The winners of the men’s and women’s 100-meter sprints – Noah Lyles and Julien Alfred cruised into the finals of the 200-meter sprint.

A frantic finish in the women’s 5,000-meter final saw Kenyan Beatrice Chebet streak away from her compatriot and two-time Olympic medalist Faith Kipyegon in the closing stages. Kipyegon endured some drama after the race. She was initially disqualified and then appealed the decision. Two hours after the race was over, she was reinstated, taking the silver.

Great Britain’s Keely Hodgkinson led from the front to win the women’s 800-meter final, upgrading the silver medal she won at the Tokyo Olympics.

American discus thrower Valarie Allman struck gold for the second consecutive Olympic Games. Her best throw of the day went 69.50 meters, more than half a meter better than her gold medal throw in Tokyo in 2021.

And Sweden’s Mondo Duplantis won the gold again in the men’s pole vault. Not satisfied with just taking the gold, Duplantis then beat his own world record, raising the bar to 6.25 meters.

And in the nightcap, the 3x3 basketball tournament had a breakout moment with thrilling finals in both the men’s and women’s gold matches. Both matches went down to the last shot, with Germany winning the women’s gold and The Netherlands edging out host nation France to take the gold in the men’s game.

Kauli Vaast of France reacts as he exits a wave during the men's gold medal final of the surfing competition at the 2024 Summer Olympics, on August 5, in Teahupo'o, Tahiti.

Tahiti local Kauli Vaast won gold for France in the men’s surfing event on Monday while Caroline Marks of Team USA won the women’s competition.

Vaast, who is from Teahupo’o where the event is being hosted, began the final against Australian Jack Robinson with an almost perfect 9.5 score on his first run before an 8.0 which sealed the victory.

Vaast, 22, was cheered on by the majority of the locals during the competition, and after claiming gold, it was a unique scene with many in the water and on land celebrating his victory.

In the women’s event, Marks produced scores of 7.50 and 3.00 but it was enough as her fellow finalist – Tatiana Weston-Webb of Brazil – fell just short of the 4.68 to win gold, scoring 4.50, as Marks was crowned Olympic champion.

Yui Susaki of Team Japan celebrates victory over Yanan Sun of Team China during the women's 50kg final on day fifteen of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games at Makuhari Messe Hall on August 7, 2021 in Tokyo, Japan.

She only recently turned 25, but Yui Susaki is already a reigning Olympic gold medalist and four-time world champion, and is widely touted as the best pound-for-pound freestyle wrestler in the world.

Susaki – all five feet (1.52 meters) of her – has never lost an international bout at senior level, and another dominant performance at theParis Gamescould propel her into the conversation over the greatest of all time. So how does she do it?

“There’s a concept in Japanese – ‘shin-gi-tai’ – that encompasses the mental, technical and physical approach to life,” Susaki told CNN via video call between her grueling morning training sessions as she prepared for the Games.

“When you get to the Olympics, the world’s highest stage, everyone’s shin-gi-tai is at similar levels. So to reach the top, you need your soul. Then your emotions are the last stretch – you need to believe in yourself constantly. I always make sure to do that when I train.”

Under the wing of long-time coach and wrestling legend Shoko Yoshimura, Susaki tore through her Olympic debut at the Covid-impacted Tokyo Games three years ago without conceding a single point in the women’s 50kg category.

Known for her technical prowess and raw strength, Susaki has been labeled “untouchable” and a “gold medal machine” by commentators in the lead-up to Paris. She intends to defend her title – but it doesn’t end there.

“I’m really looking forward to Paris as there will be a live audience this time. My first goal is to win gold and I will do my best to achieve my second consecutive Olympic victory,” Susaki, a native of Chiba prefecture, said.

“Then Los Angeles (2028), then Brisbane (2032), so my goal is to win at the Olympics four times in a row.”

Susaki begins her title defense on Tuesday at 11 a.m. in Paris when she faces Vinesh Vinesh of India.

'Mondo' Duplantis of Team Sweden competes during the men's pole vault final at Stade de France on August 5.

No one needs more proof thatMondo Duplantisis among the greatest athletes of this generation, but we get it almost every time he steps onto the runway.

TheParis Olympic Gameswere no exception. Backed by a deafening roar from those in the stands, the Swedish pole vault star broke his own world record with a giant clearance of 6.25 meters at the third and final time of asking.

It was the final act of a sweltering evening in Paris’ Stade de France on Monday, Duplantis once again underlining his complete dominance in this event by breaking the record for the ninth time in his career.

After failing on his first two attempts at the record, Duplantis crept over the bar on his third, springing to his feet and running to the stands to embrace his family.

“I haven’t processed how fantastic that moment was,” said the 24-year-old. “It’s one of those things that don’t really feel real, such an out-of-body experience. It’s still hard to kind of land right now.

“What can I say? I just broke a world record at the Olympics, biggest possible stage for a pole vaulter. The biggest dream since I was a kid was to break the world record at the Olympics, and I’ve been able to do that in front of the most ridiculous crowd I’ve ever competed in front of.”

Duplantis had wrapped up the gold medal long before his world record clearance, successfully defending his title from the Tokyo Olympics and adding to his three world championship crowns.

Monday marked the last day of gymnastics competition at the Paris Olympics — and it was a day full of dramatic twists and turns.
